If you are an artist willing to grow and monetize your website, you should know how to attract visitors to your website and what art keywords they use to search for websites like yours.

Search engine optimization (SEO) is one way to create a consistent flow of traffic coming from organic search results. Unlike social media and other platforms, SEO can help you attract your target audience even if you don’t regularly publish content on your website.

That’s because high-quality content optimized for keywords and users’ search intent can stay on top of Google organic search results for years!

Even though I only publish a few content pieces per month, my website has grown from 0 to 6k+ organic traffic with roughly 70 pages.

You can achieve similar and even better results if you focus on the most searched art keywords with low keyword difficulty.

This article is a continuation of my keyword research studies. I’ve already shared easy-to-rank dental keywords and education keywords.

This time, I’ll share a list of keywords for artist websites with low competition and decent search traffic potential.

If you’re wondering, “What are keywords for art?” my list of art-related keywords will come in handy.

Art keywords list with low-medium difficulty

There are so many art keywords related to different types of art. Instead of niching down my keyword list, I researched general SEO keywords for artists.

Unlike most articles on the web, the list below contains only low and medium-difficulty keywords with traffic and business potential.

You can rank for these keywords realistically even if your website is new or has low domain authority.

I used several SEO tools to research and analyze keywords: Mangools and Semrush. Both are affordable and can help you quickly find keywords based on your criteria.

  1. Abstract canvas wall art
  2. Christmas canvas wall art
  3. Frames for canvas art
  4. Easy painting ideas
  5. Body painting
  6. Frida Kahlo paintings
  7. Magritte paintings
  8. Concept art
  9. Japanese art
  10. Art therapy certification
  11. Black and white art
  12. Artist painting tools
  13. Acrylic painting tools
  14. Drawing ideas
  15. Flower drawing
  16. Art books
  17. Modern art prints
  18. Vintage art prints
  19. Etsy art prints
  20. Art set for kids

1. Abstract canvas wall art

  • Keyword difficulty: 29/100
  • Global volume: 2,200
  • Search volume in the USA: 1,000
  • Search intent: Informational

This is an excellent keyword for artists offering wall art design services.

This keyword has an informational search intent, which means users are interested in reviewing various abstract canvas ideas for walls. If you create various abstract designs for walls, it’s your chance to list the best design ideas for users.

You can also encourage users to join your email list (if you have any) or purchase your artistic products. Based on my experience, informational content can help you generate additional revenue if you use call-to-actions (CTAs) natively without harming user experience.

I used Mangools to analyze this keyword. You can see the most important metrics, such as keyword difficulty and search volume, with related keywords on a screenshot below.

2. Christmas canvas wall art

  • Keyword difficulty: 27/100
  • Global volume: 900
  • Search volume in the USA: 72
  • Search intent: Transactional

If you offer wall art services, this keyword can help you make additional revenue before Christmas. Think about it this way: people usually search for Christmas presents way before the holidays start. If your website ranks high for this keyword, you can share your wall art ideas with them and offer to purchase them.

Like in the example above, the ideal content structure to target this keyword would be listicles. I used the Semrush tool to analyze this keyword. Semrush has a free plan and a 7-day trial for its Pro plan to test all its online marketing features.

3. Frames for canvas art

  • Keyword difficulty: 25/100
  • Global volume: 4,200
  • Search volume in the USA: 1,300
  • Search intent: Commercial

This keyword has a commercial search intent, meaning people are interested in purchasing frames for canvas art. If you want to target this art keyword, ensure your landing page contains more than one product your potential customers can choose from.

I also recommend adding around 500–1,000 words of related content on the page to help users make an informed purchase decision and increase your chances of ranking content on Google.

4. Easy painting ideas

  • Keyword difficulty: 31/100
  • Global volume: 150,000
  • Search volume in the USA: 57,000
  • Search intent: Informational

Compared to other keywords, this one has a medium keyword difficulty with a very high search volume — 57,000 in the US alone, according to Mangools

Since this keyword has an informational search intent, I recommend creating a blog post featuring unique painting ideas that would differentiate you from your competitors.

Feel free to feature your products and include links to your sales pages. Even though sales aren’t guaranteed, it’s a great way to promote your products and services.

5. Body painting

  • Keyword difficulty: 27/100
  • Global volume: 260,000
  • Search volume in the USA: 96,200
  • Search intent: Informational

This is an excellent keyword to target for artists offering body art services. The keyword is easy to target, while the potential global reach is up to 260,000 monthly views.

I recommend exploring this keyword and other related keywords, like full-body painting or festival-body painting. As a next step, create long-form blog posts showcasing your works and promoting your services.

6. Frida Kahlo paintings

  • Keyword difficulty: 69/100
  • Global volume: 89,800
  • Search volume in the USA: 49,500
  • Search intent: Informational

This is a rather tricky keyword to target. However, you can target this keyword if your website has been live for a while and has a decent domain authority ( at least 30).

The search intent is informational, which means people are interested in learning about Frida Kahlo’s paintings. If you want to create an informational blog post on this topic, add a paragraph on why Frida Kahlo became famous, what paintings are most well-known, and add images.

You can also feature your products and services for bigger exposure.

7. Magritte paintings

  • Keyword difficulty: 45/100
  • Global volume: 10,000
  • Search volume in the USA: 5,400
  • Search intent: Informational

This keyword is very similar to the previous one. However, the keyword difficulty and search volumes are relatively lower.

8. Concept art

  • Keyword difficulty: 27/100
  • Global volume: 64,900
  • Search volume in the USA: 9,900
  • Search intent: Informational

This is a general keyword with an informational search intent. To rank on Google, you’ll have to write an in-depth article explaining the concept art and showing examples.

If your post is well-optimized for this art keyword and ranks high on Google, it’s also possible to get a featured snippet and get ranked in a so-called “zero” position.

9. Japanese art

  • Keyword difficulty: 59/100
  • Global volume: 56,600
  • Search volume in the USA: 14,800
  • Search intent: Informational

Like the previous example, the Japanese art keyword has an informational search intent. If that’s your area of expertise, I highly recommend targeting this keyword.

Since this keyword is somewhat competitive, I’d suggest writing a long-form blog post explaining Japanese art, how it evolved, what it covers, and showing examples.

10. Art therapy certification

  • Keyword difficulty: 30/100
  • Global volume: 4,000
  • Search volume in the USA: 2,900
  • Search intent: Commercial

Unlike some of the previous keywords, this one has a commercial search intent. You can promote your art therapy certification if you offer this service.

Ranking high for this art keyword will ensure your website has a constant flow of potential customers interested in your services. Please note that the majority of traffic comes from the USA. If that’s not your target audience, I’d recommend focusing on your local searches.

11. Black and white art

  • Keyword difficulty: 26/100
  • Global volume: 22,600
  • Search volume in the USA: 8,100
  • Search intent: Mixed

This keyword is interesting because it has a mixed search intent. It means that the top-ranking search results will contain blog posts and sales pages.

Since Google favors high-quality SEO writing, I recommend creating an in-depth article about black-and-white art. Feel free to advertise your products and services, too. This keyword has a relatively low keyword difficulty, so your website has a good chance of ranking high on Google (given it already has some authority).

12. Artist painting tools

  • Keyword difficulty: 22/100
  • Global volume: 390
  • Search volume in the USA: 140
  • Search intent: Transactional

Even though this keyword has a low volume, it targets a very narrow niche and has a transactional search intent. If people search for artist painting tools online, your high-ranking web page might be what they’re looking for.

Since this is a transactional blog post, ensure you feature your products or include affiliate links to make additional revenue.

13. Acrylic painting tools

  • Keyword difficulty: 14/100
  • Global volume: 520
  • Search volume in the USA: 110
  • Search intent: Mixed

This is one of the easiest-to-target art keywords on my list.

If you’ve just recently launched a website or it has close to zero domain authority, this keyword could be your chance to reach your target audience faster.

The search intent is mixed, meaning your optimized informational blog posts can help you make sales if you feature your product or include affiliate links to scroll painting tools on Amazon.

Hitting the Google front page with this keyword is doable within a few months if you optimize your website from the very beginning. To do it, check my SEO guide for new websites.

14. Drawing ideas

  • Keyword difficulty: 44/100
  • Global volume: 950,800
  • Search volume in the USA: 201,000
  • Search intent: Informational

This is one of the most popular keywords on this art keywords list in terms of monthly volumes. Almost one million people search for this keyword every month. Imagine how much organic traffic you could generate if your website ranks somewhere on the first search engine result page.

As an SEO expert, I recommend creating an optimized listicle sharing unconventional drawing ideas to stand out from competitors. You don’t have to compete based on who’s drawing ideas list is longer. If you only have 10 ideas worth sharing, do it! There is no need to list hundreds of ideas just to make your list longer. Your audience will much more appreciate a concise and to-the-point article.

15. Flower drawing

  • Keyword difficulty: 50/100
  • Global volume: 601,400
  • Search volume in the USA: 90,500
  • Search intent: Informational

This keyword is a classic example of the “how-to” art keyword. If you want to target this keyword, you’ll have to create a step-by-step guide on how to draw a flower.

Keep in mind that this keyword has a relatively high keyword difficulty. Therefore, your website should already have some authority to rank for this keyword.

16. Art books

  • Keyword difficulty: 40/100
  • Global volume: 37,900
  • Search volume in the USA: 6,600
  • Search intent: Commercial

This is an excellent keyword to target if you sell art books or promote someone’s books via affiliate links. I recommend creating a listicle featuring multiple art books you believe are worth reading.

You can check my high-ranking blog post on SEO ebooks. Even though the topic is different, the logic behind it is totally the same.

17. Modern art prints

  • Keyword difficulty: 34/100
  • Global volume: 4,500
  • Search volume in the USA: 2,400
  • Search intent: Commercial

If you sell modern art prints, this is your ideal keyword to target. The keyword difficulty is relatively low, and the global volume is decent. Depending on your capacity, you can create a sales page featuring your products or an informational blog post mentioning your products. In any case, don’t miss this opportunity.

18. Vintage art prints

  • Keyword difficulty: 30/100
  • Global volume: 3,200
  • Search volume in the USA: 1,900
  • Search intent: Commercial

Like in the example above, this keyword has a transactional intent and can help you sell your vintage art prints if your website ranks high for it.

Check my SEO ebook “How to Hit the Google Front Page” to learn how to conduct keyword research, optimize content for rankings, and create content according to Google’s content quality requirements.

19. Etsy art prints

  • Keyword difficulty: 50/100
  • Global volume: 2,500
  • Search volume in the USA: 1,300
  • Search intent: Mixed

Are you selling art products on Etsy? If yes, this is an excellent keyword to target. You can either optimize your Etsy store to sell your products or create an optimized blog post featuring your Etsy products.

20. Art set for kids

  • Keyword difficulty: 31/100
  • Global volume: 6,100
  • Search volume in the USA: 1,300
  • Search intent: Commercial

If you sell art sets for kids, be sure to target this keyword.

Since this keyword has a commercial search intent, I recommend creating a sales page featuring various art sets for kids.

This is the last art keyword on my list, but definitely not the last lucrative keyword to target. If you need help with keyword research, contact me.

SEO for artists in 2024

In 2024, captivating art meets strategic SEO.

To rise above the digital noise, you, as an artist, must harness both creativity and search engine optimization.

SEO for the art industry entails strategically enhancing websites and digital content so that search engines like Google can easily find and rank them.

Start by defining your niche and choosing keywords that can support your business goals. Infuse these keywords naturally into website content, meta descriptions, and captivating captions. If you want to learn more about keyword research and on-page optimization, check out my SEO ebook.

Keyword research for artists

Your focus should be on keywords relevant to your artwork, metadata, and high-quality images with descriptive alt text.

I recommend using search terms that your potential buyers might enter when looking for art websites similar to yours online. You can use SEO tools, like Semrush, to find keywords related to your artwork, style, and subjects.

As an SEO expert, I recommend using the following benchmarks to analyze art keywords:

  • Keyword difficulty: less than 30
  • Search intent: informational and transactional
  • Search volume: 100+
  • Traffic potential: 100+

Once you are done researching and analyzing art keywords for SEO, prioritize keywords that match your audience’s search intent and integrate them tastefully into your content writing plan like this:

Optimized content creation

Creating content is instrumental for SEO.

In my case, it means writing blog posts, creating newsletters, and providing behind-the-scenes glimpses into my SEO processes.

I’ve written over 300 articles on my Medium blog and 70+ optimized blog posts on my website, where over 80% of pages rank and attract organic traffic. I recommend focusing on the following aspects while creating blog posts or landing pages targeting your keywords:

Relevance: Ensure your content aligns with users’ search intent and wholistically covers the topic.

Originality: Offer unique viewpoints and insights to stand out in the crowded online space.

Engagement: Encourage interaction through comments and social shares.

A consistent blogging schedule helps to keep my audience engaged and informed about my latest works and exhibitions.

On-Page SEO best practices for artists

On-page SEO involves optimizing web pages to rank higher in organic search results.

As an SEO specialist, I recommend following this checklist before publishing content on your website:

  • Include your target keyword in the H1 title tag.
  • Include your target keyword in the meta title.
  • Include your target keyword and/or semantically related keywords in the meta description.
  • Include your target keyword and 1–2 semantically related keywords in the first 300 words of your article.
