Let me guess—you’re here because you’re curious about making money writing online.
I get it.
I started looking for writing gigs for the same reason: I wanted to earn more and have multiple income streams.
Back in 2020, I had a full-time job and knew nothing about making money writing, but I knew what I wanted:
Flexibility to set my own schedule, work from anywhere, and just feel good about life.
But if I kept doing the same thing, nothing would change.
So, I stepped out of my comfort zone. I searched for opportunities that aligned with my goals, whether that meant landing a new job, freelancing, or starting my own business.
That’s how I slowly built my online writing business. Over the years, I’ve explored:
- Getting paid to write on Medium
- Ghostwriting
- Selling ebooks
- Monetizing my blog
- Launching and growing a newsletter
- And more!
I break down all my 2024 earnings, including Medium, my blog, ebook sales, and more, in my latest ebook, 2024 Creator Profit Book: Insider Earnings Revealed.
If you want real, proven strategies for making money writing online, my ebook has all the details, what worked, and exactly how much I made.
But if you’re looking for the best ways to make money writing online and wondering whether it’s worth it, here’s a quick summary below.
Launch a blog
There are so many ways to make money writing from home nowadays!
As a website owner, I’ve tried dozens of different methods, including:
- Affiliate marketing
- Sponsored backlinks
- Paid mentions
- Google AdSense for publishers
- Selling your own products or services
- Running a paid newsletter that offers extra value
- Hosting paid seminars
- And more!
All these methods have their pros and cons. Additionally, not every method will suit you if you are just getting started.
I recommend monetizing your website if you get at least 100 clicks daily.
You can get started with affiliate programs, promoting your favorite products and services. Additionally, you can start promoting your own products and services (if you’ve got any) via your website.
Don’t be shy to do it. Let people know who you are and what you do, even if just a few people will see your work.
My website made me $8,841.57 in 2024 (more about it in my ebook) from two different income streams:
- Affiliate marketing
- Sponsorships
In 2025, I’m setting a goal to earn over $20,000 from my website. I’ve already achieved more than 20% of that target!
If you’ve been following my newsletter, you might know that I consistently make four figures from my website. I share all the numbers, affiliate programs, and traffic sources in my monthly affiliate reports, which are part of my Premium content.
But I also share lots of insights with my readers for free, including my website earnings:
- January 2025 monthly recap: Site income is $1,205,59
- February 2025 monthly recap: Site income is $2,068.57
- March 2025 monthly recap: Site income is $2,094.10
Right now, my website gets around 10k visitors a month.
If I want to make more money, I need to bring in more traffic. Luckily, with years of SEO experience, I know it’s doable with the right strategy and solid content.
If you’re looking to start and monetize your blog, I’ve put together some resources filled with my best tips and strategies. They’ll save you time and help you get results faster!
Get paid to write on Medium
If you’re wondering, “How can I make money writing as a beginner?”—I’ve got you!
One great option is Medium. It’s a huge platform with over 170 million readers worldwide, and anyone can publish their stories there.
I jumped in back in March 2020 and have been writing ever since.
Here’s what I’ve achieved:

Additionally, I overcame my fear of writing, found like-minded friends, and built a powerful personal brand through my content.
Medium is a long-term game that will likely start paying off in a year or two. I know some writers who made it big on Medium in their first month, but it’s an exception.
Treat your writing as your business. That’s the only way to achieve decent results on Medium. Focus on the journey, not on a destination!
You can learn more about the platform from the following resources:
Start a newsletter
You might know that I run my newsletter “Contentpreneur Corner” on beehiiv.
As a content creator with a small list of just over 1,000 subscribers, I earned $940.32 in my first 12 months from running my newsletter on beehiiv purely from ads.
beehiiv offers guaranteed ad placements and $1–$4 payments for every subscriber you refer to other creators.
With only an hour a week spent on writing, scheduling, and sending the newsletter (around 4–5 hours a month), that works out to roughly $15.67 per hour.
I share more about my experience growing and monetizing a newsletter in my beehiiv review.
I’ve also been super inspired to take my newsletter side hustle to the next level, thanks to Steven Van, a product marketing strategist at beehiiv.
He’s been sharing his impressive success story on Twitter, and it’s hard not to feel motivated by it.

I used to watch his super helpful tutorials about the platform, but I didn’t know he was actually running multiple newsletters on beehiiv!
He’s one of the few who’s openly sharing his progress, and honestly, it’s been such a boost to my motivation.
I’ve also started offering Premium newsletter subscriptions on beehiiv. It turns out the size of your email list doesn’t really matter. What matters is your relationships with your audience.
These days, I share my monthly affiliate reports and marketing case studies with my Premium members. Plus, they can read my Medium content for free—no Medium subscription needed.

There’s one more thing worth knowing before you get started.
Even if other creators talk about similar topics, what sets your newsletters apart is YOU— your personality, your journey, your unique perspective.
Your life experiences, your opinions, and your unique voice are what set you apart.
The more you share what you’re passionate about, the more your community of like-minded people will grow.
If making money writing sounds like your thing, give beehiiv a shot!
beehiiv offers a 30-day free trial, which is plenty of time to explore its powerful tools.
And if you like it, here’s a little bonus: use the code 20BEEHIIV to save 20% on all payments for the first three months!
Sell digital products
Turning your knowledge into an ebook is an easy way to get paid for writing.
Yet many people still overlook this opportunity. They often say they’re unsure of what to write or why anyone would be interested in buying their ebooks. But these are just excuses!
Writing isn’t a luxury.
The landscape has shifted.
You don’t have to be an expert to write a book and earn money online. In fact, many readers aren’t looking for experts; they want someone relatable and approachable.
Everyone has something unique and valuable to contribute to the world.
If you want to create an ebook that people will be eager to buy, focus on addressing their pain points.
Here’s how I did it.
As an SEO specialist and content writer, I’ve been helping brands create content that ranks well on Google for years, and I’ve achieved that with my own website as well.
So, I transformed one of my successful Medium posts into an SEO writing ebook.
The outcome?
I’ve sold over 350 ebook copies and made $10,000+ from selling my SEO ebook on Gumroad just by casually mentioning it in my content. That just goes to show the more you repeat something, the more likely people are to notice.

There are many ways to make money writing, but I chose to skip freelancing on Fiverr and Upwork. It just doesn’t feel fulfilling to me. I used to write on Upwork, and it’s a solid platform for freelancers. But I’d rather build my own brand and set my own value. That feels more rewarding.
I’ll update this post as I discover new ways to make money writing. Got ideas or experiences to share? Drop them in the comments!
