If you are a newbie to marketing and looking for the best content writing tools for SEO, look no further.
As a self-made marketer with over three years of experience, I’ve tried many paid and free SEO tools to create searchable content.
Different SEO content tools suggest different keywords, global volumes, and competition. Besides, it’s often challenging to switch from one SEO content writing software to another.
I’ve seen many articles listing dozens of SEO tools for content writing. The fact that those tools exist does not mean they have been personally checked by those who recommend them. Besides, not every SEO content writing tool can help you reach your goals — create well-optimized and helpful content.
I share my top paid and free content writing tools for SEO in this article.
As a marketer, I’ve been using these tools to help businesses establish their online presence and drive customers. Moreover, I use these SEO content tools to conduct keyword research and grow my website.
Before I list my favorite tools for SEO content writing, let me quickly summarize what SEO content writing is and why it’s of the utmost importance for anyone willing to create an online business.
What is SEO content writing?
Let me ask you a straightforward question, how do you search for answers online? Do you google them? Do you ask for help on social media or post a question on Quora?
According to recent research studies, over 68% of all online experiences begin with a search engine.
Over 47% of people review 3-5 pieces of content before making a purchase decision and reaching out to the seller.
Regardless of how lucrative social media channels might seem for business, the organic traffic coming from search engines should not be neglected.
Considering that over 75% of people never go to the second search engine result page, it’s your job as a writer to create content that will rank high enough for people to discover it. How to do it? By using SEO-based content writing.
I am a big fan of SEO writing because it provides long-lasting and impactful results.
SEO writing is the process of optimizing your online content with the help of keywords and search phrases people use to look for information online.
If you want to master SEO writing and create searchable content, you have to start using proven SEO optimization software and SEO guidelines for writing content. Luckily, you can learn it all from my experience and this article.
Top paid and free content writing tools for SEO
- Ahrefs keyword explorer
- Semrush SEO writing assistant
- WordPress SEO Plugin
- Moz keyword explorer
Ahrefs keyword explorer
Ahrefs is a powerful SEO toolkit used by marketers to grow websites.
I used Ahrefs to help a medical clinic build and promote its website. Besides, I’ve been successfully growing my own website thanks to Ahrefs’ site and keyword explorer tools.
If you wonder which SEO tool to use for keyword research and SEO writing, try Ahrefs’ keyword explorer. I use the following steps to conduct keyword research that you can easily replicate:
- Type in your preferred keyword in the keyword explorer
- Select the search engine (Google is chosen by default)
- Select the country for your research (United Stages is chosen in my case)
- Press “search.”
I use Ahrefs SEO content tool to write optimized content intended to rank high on Google. Here is what I check using Ahrefs:
- Keyword difficulty shows how competitive this keyword is for ranking at the top of the search results page
- Global volume for a particular keyword
- Volume for a specific keyword and country
- Keyword ideas that you should include in your content to maximize your chances to rank high on Google
You can see the data overview for one of my target keywords, “content writing tools for SEO.”
With the help of Ahrefs, I wrote a well-optimized article with over 3,000 words to rank under this specific keyword in the organic search results. Based on my previous experience, I know the chances are high for articles optimized for low and medium competition keywords to rank high without extensive promotion and link building. I aim to achieve it with this particular article!
Ahrefs is free for website owners. However, you have access to some key features only. For instance, Keyword Explorer is a paid tool. The cheapest package costs $99 and unlocks all Ahrefs’ functionality. However, Ahrefs provides several free SEO tools on their website, including Keyword Generator and Keyword Difficulty checker I highly recommend trying.
Paraphrasingtool.ai is an all-in-one writing solution for content writers and marketers.
Paraphrasingtool.ai offers the following built-in tools: paraphrasing tool, summarizing tool, content generator, plagiarism, and grammar checkers.
The tool uses artificial intelligence and advanced machine learning models that help create content similar to that written by humans.
It’s also worth highlighting the Paraphraser tool that uses over 500,000 synonyms to paraphrase your content and make it more unique. You even get an indication of your content’s uniqueness.
Thanks to the multilingual paraphrasing option, you can write articles in different languages without worrying about translation.
Paraphrasingtool.ai is a free tool with premium features. Therefore, you can save your money, time, and energy.
Semrush SEO writing assistant
Semrush is an all-in-one marketing tool that has built-in functionality for the following areas of work: SEO, PPC (paid advertisement), SMM (social media), keyword research, competitor research, and content marketing.
As a marketer, I used Semrush to do a site audit and backlinks analysis. Like Ahrefs, it’s a powerful tool that can help you improve your website’s online visibility.
Semrush has one particular feature I like as a writer and can’t wait to share with you. I am referring to the Semrush SEO writing assistant for Google Docs. It’s an SEO writing software that helps assess your content’s tone of voice, readability, originality, and optimization.
All you have to do is install this content optimization platform and start using it! Here is how.
- Navigate to the SEO writing assistant extension page on Google Marketplace.
- Click “Install”
- Choose your Google account to sign in
- Select “Allow” to let Semrush view and manage your documents
- You can find Semrush SEO writing assistant as a Google Docs Add-on
Hint: Make sure to refresh your Google Doc page a few times when you set up the Semrush SEO writing assistant. I’ve experienced delays with the installation, which I resolved by refreshing a page a few times.
Here is how the Semrush SEO tool for content writing looks inside your Google Doc. It’s a handy tool that helps you create well-crafted SEO-friendly content right in your document without the need to use other tools.
Semrush writing assistant is not a free tool. I wish it were! It would have made the life of many solopreneurs much easier. However, every good digital product is paid and this one is not an exception.
You have to be subscribed to the Semrush Guru plan to access its functionality. The up-to-date price is $229.95 per month or $191.62 for an annual plan.
Besides, Semrush offers a 7-day free trial if you would like to explore its functionality or do prompt research for your project.
WordPress SEO plugin
I know what you might be thinking. The tools mentioned above seem too expensive. As a solo content creator, you cannot afford them. I certainly agree.
As a marketer, I used Ahrefs and Semrush at my former workplaces. I admit they are the best tools you’ll ever need for SEO content writing. However, they are not the only content optimization tools available.
Kathleen Garvin, blog community manager at Semrush, notes that “more than one keyword tool should be in your arsenal, and your content marketing should contain a mix of head and long-tail keywords.”
Let me introduce you to other SEO tools for content writing.
I recommend installing the All in One SEO WordPress plugin if you own a WordPress website. It is one of the most popular SEO plugins, along with the Yoast SEO plugin.
All in One SEO plugin is a low-hanging fruit that can help you optimize your content and improve your website’s ranking. It takes a few minutes. This plugin has a paid plan, but everything I discuss and show below can be done with a free plan.
I use the All in One SEO content optimization tool to write SEO-friendly post titles, meta descriptions and check the overall content optimization for search engines.
Once you install the plugin, you’ll have the dashboard at the bottom of your WordPress page editor with the SEO optimization toolkit. Here is what it looks like for one of my articles.
You can see that my optimization score is 86 out of 100, which means I put effort into creating SEO-friendly content on the topic of WordPress monetization. This content piece is not only helpful for readers, but its purpose is also evident for search engine bots.
You don’t need to pay anything to use the All in One SEO plugin. Everything I’ve shown you above can be done with a free plan. However, if you want to try advanced functionality, the yearly plan will cost you $99.00 for one website. Here is what the All in One SEO Pro plan offers:
Moz keyword explorer
Have you ever heard of Rand Fishkin? If you are passionate about SEO, like I am, you’ve probably heard of him at least once.
Rand Fishkin is a thought leader in search engine optimization and one of the co-founders of Moz SEO software. Moz is an all-in-one marketing tool like Ahrefs and Semrush. However, it was founded in 2004, much earlier than Ahrefs and Semrush. Moz helps businesses manage numerous SEO-related tasks, such as keyword research, SEO audit, content audit, and link building, to name a few.
If you are looking for powerful SEO content software, try the Moz keyword explorer. It is pretty easy to work with. If you want to find search queries for your next article, you’ll have to register at Moz and insert your keyword into the keyword explore tool, as I did in the screenshot below.
Unlike Ahrefs, Moz offers ten free keyword searches per month. Based on my experience, it’s enough to conduct keyword research and collect low-hanging fruit queries for your content.
Inside the Moz account, you’ll see the comprehensive keyword analysis with the semantically related keyword suggestions. In my example below, you can see the keyword monthly volume, the keyword difficulty (how difficult it will be to rank at the top of search engine results), and organic CTR (how many people click on organic search results). This information is vital to decide whether it’s worth exploring this keyword further. As a marketer, I know my website can rank high for this keyword if I create well-optimized content. This is why I kept exploring it further.
Moz SEO content optimization tool provides around 1000 semantically related keyword suggestions, which you can use to create SEO-friendly content for your website. Besides, you can also see who’s already ranking in the top ten. This valuable information can help you write better content and headlines.
Like Ahrefs and Semrush, Moz is paid SEO optimization software. Once your 30-day free trial is over, Moz Pro will cost you $179 per month. However, Moz keyword explorer gives you ten free searches per month. Based on my experience, it’s enough if you run a personal blog or a small website.
Neil Patel is a top web influencer, according to the Wall Street Journal, a New York Times Bestselling author, and the co-founder of Ubersuggest tool for SEO.
Ubersuggest is a free content writing tool for SEO that can help you generate and analyze new keyword ideas. The tool lets you run three keyword searches daily without registration. It’s fast and convenient. You can see the keywords stats overview right in one place in seconds. Here is what Ubersuggest’s keyword report looks like:
Like other content writing tools for SEO, Ubersuggest shows the monthly search volume for your target keyword, the keyword difficulty, paid difficulty (estimated competition in paid search), and the CPC or cost per click.
It’s important to note that the numbers Ubersuggest shows you are the estimates!
The keyword volume for the “content writing tools for seo” search query is 90 for the USA, according to Ahrefs, 11-50, according to Moz, 140, according to Semrush, and 140, according to Ubersuggest. However, your content won’t attract an audience from one country only. This is why the global volume metric used by Ahrefs and Semrush is more accurate.
Ubersuggest has one more fantastic feature website owners will mainly like. It’s called “Page 1 ranking potential.” This feature shows the keywords your site has the potential to rank for on the first search engine result page.
If you don’t know which SEO writing tool to use for content writing, editing, and optimization. I would recommend trying Ubersuggest. It provides you with a brief keyword stats analysis and related keyword suggestions. Besides, you can run three daily searches for free.
If three daily searches are not enough for you, you want to run extensive keyword research and do competitor and backlink analysis; then the paid plan will be ideal for you. Ubersuggest is one of the most affordable yet powerful SEO toolkits compared to Moz, Ahrefs, and Semrush. The pricing starts from $12/month for managing 1-3 websites.
7 best practices for SEO content writing
Powerful content writing tools for SEO can help you create searchable content that has the potential to rank high in search engines. However, it’s essential to know the best practices for SEO content writing to maximize your chances for success.
As a marketer, I have written many SEO-friendly transactional blog posts to help a UX agency with lead generation. Besides, I closely worked with a proctology medical center in Ukraine to help them with website creation, SEO copywriting, and Google Ads.
My best practices for SEO content writing are based on over three years of experience, trial and error, and numerous experiments. Search engine algorithms change day by day, and that’s why an SEO content writer needs to stay on top of the latest trends.
I use the following SEO writing checklist to optimize content for search engines. If you wonder how to write good content for SEO, I hope you’ll find this short checklist handy. All you need to do is apply it while creating content.
1. Optimize the main headline H1 and sub-headlines H2, H3, H4
Headlines facilitate reading comprehension.
If the content is well-structured, you can quickly skim a page and grasp what it is about. The same is true for search engine bots, like Google bot. Its goal is to discover, crawl, and index new pages to become searchable. The better the Google bot understands your content, the higher your chances are for top rankings.
When you create optimized content, make sure to include your target keywords in the title and subtitles of your page. Here is how I did it for this particular article. My target keyword is “content writing tools for SEO.” I crafted the following user and SEO-friendly headline:
6 Content Writing Tools For SEO In 2022 (Reviewed by a Marketer)
I love this headline because it promises up-to-date information (in 2022) and communicates trust (reviewed by a marketer). Besides, it contains my target keyword. The same applies to subheadlines, where you can include your semantically related keywords.
2. Include the target keywords in your meta title and description
Metadata helps search engines understand the content on your web page.
Meta title and description are usually shown whenever your page appears in search engine results. Users see the title before they land on your website. Therefore, it’s crucial to make it catchy and optimized.
Meta titles are usually up to 62 characters. In comparison, the meta description can be up to 170 characters.
As a marketer, I recommend using the same title on your website and in the metadata, given it is optimized and catchy. If you run your website on WordPress, the SEO plugins can help you do it. I use the All in One SEO plugin to optimize metadata for search engines.
3. Add relevant, contextual links to previously published content
This way, you provide more value to readers and increase their time spent on your website.
User experience is part of the Core Web Vitals. These are Google’s metrics that measure how fast your website’s loading, how deeply users interact with it, and layout shift metrics. Core Web Vitals are part of the ranking algorithm. Therefore, it’s essential to optimize content for SEO and care about users’ on-page experience.
I usually interlink new content with other relevant pages. Besides, I mention the newly published article in some older blog posts. It helps keep readers engaged longer and decreases the bounce rate (single-page user sessions).
4. Optimize the length of your article
Before you publish new content, take some time to examine the content length of the best-performing articles in the top search results. If you want to outperform them, your content should be as long (or even longer) and provide more value to users.
Creating slightly paraphrased content of the same length as in the top search engine results won’t help you outperform competitors. Why should Google rank your content higher if it has no added value?
I know many marketers blog about SEO and write content on the same topics. However, my experience, projects I worked on, and learning are unique. It helps my website stand out among the others.
If you want to create helpful content for readers on the old-good topic, add your unique perspective, experience, and opinion. It will help you make your content memorable.
5. Choose low and middle competition keywords with high (or relatively high) monthly volumes
The top paid and free tools for SEO content writing mentioned in this article will help you discover low-hanging fruit keywords for your website. If your website’s domain authority is low, you won’t rank high despite how well you optimize your content. Older and more reputable websites will always be at the top of the search engine results page.
What you should do instead is create content for low and middle-competition keywords. I’ve been following this strategy for a while, and my website’s impressions are growing steadily. Besides, some of my website’s pages have already reached the second Google page without link-building effort!
6. Optimize your images
Search engine bots can’t understand what’s on your images. However, they can read image titles and alt tags.
If you want to create an SEO-friendly article containing images, include your target keywords in the title and alt tags. This way, you will help search engines better understand the purpose of your content. Moreover, your images will show up in the image search results.
It’s also recommended to compress your image sizes to reduce your website’s loading speed. Why do it? It’s confirmed that the website’s loading speed is one of the ranking factors. Instead of using PNG and JPEG image formats, try modern formats like AVIF or WebP, which have superior compression and quality characteristics.
As a WordPress website owner, I use the Smush image optimization plugin that helps to compress and optimize images while uploading to WordPress.
7. Optimize content not only for search engine bots but also for users
On-page user experience is as vital as optimizing content for search engines. Therefore, I recommend using online writing tools and content writing software tools for SEO writers.
Grammarly and Hemingway writing assistants will help you polish your grammar and spelling, improve readability and stick to your preferred tone of voice. Keyword density checkers, like the SEO review tool or Prepostseo, will help you see whether you over-spam your content and how often your keyword is used in the text.
