Since my website has some visibility in organic search results, my email inbox is often flooded with requests such as “Test our new AI visibility tool and if you like it, add it to your blog posts.

Honestly, I’m overwhelmed with the number of new SEO and AI tools being launched lately. We SEOs haven’t really cracked the code on how AI SEO works, and actually, how to call it right, but businesses already see this as an opportunity.

I started putting together a list of AI search visibility tools for tracking back in January 2026, but over time, it kept getting bigger and bigger.

By the end of March 2026, I had a much better understanding of which tools are actually worth testing and which ones aren’t worth your money.

Below, I’m sharing how I think about tracking visibility in AI search results and LLMs. Plus, which tools, both free and paid, you can use to monitor your brand’s AI performance.

I’ll also share what I’ve personally seen while tracking Self Made Millennials in AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.

My experience with AI visibility tools

In my experience, not all tools define AI mentions and citations the same way. Most AI visibility tools are obsessed with tracking brand mentions, but that’s only the tip of the iceberg.

The bigger question is usually: how do you actually track your content being cited in LLMs and AI search results?

In my experience, mentions show whether AI talks about your brand. Citations show whether AI uses your content as a source. In other words:

  • Mentions = brand visibility
  • Citations = actual content visibility

A mention means your brand, website, product, or person is referenced in the AI-generated answer. A citation means the AI system uses your page as a source and often shows a link or source card to your website.

I believe these are two different metrics, and they should be measured differently if you want to get a clear and detailed overview of your brand performance in AI search results and LLMs. So, keep an eye on this when choosing a suitable AI search visibility tracking tool.

There’s one more thing I’ve noticed that’s worth sharing: unlike organic rankings, mentions and citations aren’t stable. Therefore, the performance data reported by the tools can be inaccurate.

According to Semrush’s study on AI Overviews volatility, for keywords where AI Overviews appeared at least 20 out of 31 days:

  • 0 keywords had 100% URL consistency
  • 96% of AI Overviews saw a domain change
  • 91% of URLs were removed at some point
  • Only 43% of removed URLs returned later in the month
  • On average, Google changed the URLs within AI Overviews 12.32 times on desktop and 12.49 times on mobile
Semrush AI Overviews volatility study

Semrush also suggests that 40%-60% of sources cited by LLMs change every month. That’s because AI platforms are non-deterministic. They can generate different responses for the same prompt throughout the day.

With all this, it’s hard to get any measurable outcome. That’s why I honestly don’t pay much attention to tracking AI visibility of my website. Instead, I occasionally check the AI visibility reports in Semrush (more on that below) and continue implementing my SEO content strategy.

If you want to give AI search optimization tools a try, I’ve got quite a few tools to recommend below.

Best AI visibility tools 2026

Here’s what I pay attention to when testing AI visibility tools:

  1. Pricing check: First, I look at the pricing because let’s be real — budget matters. I want to know if what they’re charging actually makes sense for what you get.
  2. Promises vs. reality: Then I dig into what the tool promises versus what it actually delivers. Sometimes the marketing sounds amazing, but the reality? Not so much.
  3. Direct contact: I reach out to team members at these companies. Getting clarifications directly from the people building the tool helps me understand what’s going on under the hood.
  4. Reddit research: Reddit is honestly one of my favorite places to check. Real users don’t hold back there, and you get the unfiltered truth about what’s working and what’s not.
  5. Hands-on testing: I’ve personally used all the tools mentioned below. I’ve tried the main features and run reports.

Below is a list of AI SEO tools I’ve either used before or still use today, like Semrush, for my SEO and AI-related work. I’ve kept the descriptions detailed on purpose, so you can clearly see how each tool works and decide if it’s the right fit for you.

1. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit can help you automatically evaluate your brand’s visibility across AI Overviews and LLMs like ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.

What I like most is that it separates brand mentions and cited pages, which is a big deal if you actually want to understand whether your content is being referenced.

Semrush AI Visibility toolkit includes:

  • 1 domain for brand performance analysis
  • 300 daily queries in AI Analysis reports
  • 25 prompts for prompt tracking
  • AI Search Checks in Site Audit for up to 100 pages
  • Coverage across multiple regions for ChatGPT, AI Overviews, and AI Mode: US, UK, Canada, Australia, India, Spain, Japan, and Mexico
  • A massive AI search database (the draft notes 213 million prompts)

What the AI Visibility report gives you

  • AI Visibility Score – a benchmark metric showing your presence across AI platforms
  • AI Visibility Trends – historical growth and performance
  • AI Mention Audit – prompts where your brand is included (and where it’s missing)
  • Direct Breakdowns – visibility by LLM and country
  • Topic & Source Opportunities – prompts where you’re missing, which can guide future content

According to Semrush, the AI Visibility Score is derived from analyzing millions of AI-generated conversations across LLMs and AI search environments like Google AI Mode and ChatGPT.

In my case, the score is relatively low because my site is smaller compared to established players. That said, I’ve still seen Self Made Millennials show up in AI Overviews for some of my stronger keywords, including: AI SEO, AI SEO tools, and AI marketing tools.

Semrush AI Visibility Overview April 2026

In a nutshell, Semrush helps you understand how AI search engines “see” your brand compared to competitors. Then it gives you suggestions on what topics, content gaps, and opportunities might improve your visibility over time.

If you’re a content creator or site owner, this is one of the strongest AI search visibility tools you can add to your stack. I also published a more detailed Semrush AI Visibility toolkit review if interested.

Note that Semrush charges $99/month, which lets you track 1 domain for Brand Performance analysis. Unlike many other tools, you can generate AI visibility reports for any website, which is super helpful for SEO teams and agencies working with multiple clients.

You can also track up to 25 prompts with daily performance updates. Note that an additional seat would cost you $45 per user.

In case you are a Semrush One user (SEO + AI Visibility toolkits), you’ll have to pay $199/month for all SEO and AI search functionality. In my experience, that’s more beneficial for SEO specialists, SEO contractors, teams, and agencies, since you’ll have two solutions in one. Semrush also offers 50 prompts for Semrush One users.

Here’s what Reddit users say about the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit. After testing it for over 6 months, I agree with the following:

“Everyone asks AI chatbots different questions, so this is just a simulation of queries and responses. Semrush’s AI Visibility toolkit is helpful directionally, but the data isn’t fully precise.”

2. SE Ranking AI Visibility Tracker

  • Best for: Mid-size businesses, marketers who want a simpler interface, and teams that want AI visibility without Semrush-level pricing
  • Pricing: Pricing depends on plan and usage (check current plans directly)
  • Free trial: 14 days
SE Ranking AI Visibility Tracker

SE Ranking’s AI Visibility Tracker blends traditional SEO software with newer AI visibility tracking.

SE Ranking lets you monitor how your website appears across:

  • Google AI Overviews
  • Google AI Mode
  • ChatGPT
  • Gemini
  • Perplexity

One nice bonus: they also offer a free AI search visibility checker on their website.

You can use it to quickly compare your site against up to 5 competitors across those AI platforms.

When I tested it, I was pleasantly surprised to see that my relatively small site was holding up pretty well for some target keywords.

SE Ranking free AI visibility checker

I dug a bit deeper to see what users think of SE Ranking AI Visibility Tracker and found a few pretty recent comments worth sharing.

One Reddit user mentioned:

“SE Ranking’s AI visibility tools are worth adding: their AEO Tracker covers brand mentions and links in ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews, and their Gemini Tracker is excellent for benchmarking your presence in Gemini answers, tracking competitors, and spotting visibility gaps.”

That lines up with the direction SE Ranking seems to be taking. It’s not the tool I personally rely on most, but it’s one I’d keep on my radar, especially if you already use SE Ranking for SEO.

3. AI Peekaboo

  • Best for: Site owners, content creators, and smaller brands looking for affordable AI visibility tracking with useful free tools
  • Pricing: From $50/month
  • Free trial: 14 days
Peekaboo AI April 2026

Peekaboo is one of the more affordable AI search visibility tools I’ve tested. It can help you monitor brand mentions and citations across:

  • ChatGPT
  • Gemini
  • Perplexity
  • Google AI Overviews
  • Google AI Mode

One of the founders, Filipe Lins Duarte, reached out to me and kindly offered access to test the platform. I always appreciate it when founders do this,  especially in a crowded market where a lot of tools look similar on the surface.

Here’s what you get with Peekaboo:

  • A dashboard where you can add, edit, and delete prompts
  • Search Console integration
  • Looker Studio integration
  • Visibility overview of your brand vs competitors
  • Manual prompt creation or automatic prompt recommendations
  • Most recent cited sources based on your prompts
  • A detailed breakdown for each prompt with a visibility score for your domain

It’s worth noting that the platform needs some time to analyze your domain and prompts before the reports become useful. But once it does, the interface is user-friendly, and the reports are clean.

AI search visibility tracking with Peekaboo

Peekaboo correctly reported my website’s performance for the “AI SEO tools” keyword in AI Overviews, which matched what I was seeing in multiple other tools. That’s always a good sign.

AI Overviews tracking tool

Peekaboo also offers several free AI visibility tools you can use without even creating an account:

  • Visibility Gap Analyzer: Finds topics where competitors are visible but you aren’t
  • AI Crawlability Checker: Analyzes how accessible your website is for AI language models
  • LLM.txt Generator: Helps you create a structured file so LLMs can better understand your site
  • Sentiment Checker: Analyzes how AI tools perceive your brand
  • Product Visibility: Checks how your products appear across AI platforms

I tried their AI Crawlability Checker to see how accessible my website is for AI language models. A 100/100 score was a great result to see.

Peekaboo free AI Crawlability Checker

I dived deeper to learn how Peekaboo estimates the AI search visibility. Here’s the response I found from one of their team members on Reddit:

“We monitor public LLM outputs from sources like shared ChatGPT threads, Perplexity results, and Poe conversations to identify when your site or brand shows up in completions

We identify common citation formats used by LLMs and track mentions across those patterns

We check for overlap between your content and known LLM training sources like Common Crawl and open datasets. While this data is older, it still gives signal for evergreen or well-established pages

We scan your website structure and formatting to help you improve how AI can parse your content. This includes structured data, semantic tags, and clean formatting

Peekaboo is meant to be part visibility tracker and part optimizer. It gives you a directional score to see how likely AI models are to understand and cite your content, while also helping you improve those chances.”

Honestly, if you are just looking for an AI search visibility tool at affordable pricing, Pekaboo could be your go-to tool.

With the Starter plan at $50/month, you get brand AI performance tracking for one domain, 40 prompts, Looker Studio integration, data updates every two days, and more.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of the pricing:

For brands

  • Starter – $50/mo: 40 prompts, 1 brand, 4 LLM models
  • Peek – $100/mo: 40 prompts, 1 brand, 4 LLM models, API access
  • Grow – $200/mo: 100 prompts, 1 brand, 4 LLM models, API access

For agencies

  • Starter – $50/mo: 40 prompts, 2 brands, 4 LLM models
  • Peek – $100/mo: 40 prompts (20 per brand), 2 brands, API access
  • Grow – $200/mo: 100 prompts (20 per brand), 5 brands, API access

I suggest picking a plan from the agency’s package since you get to track more brands for the same price.

4. Search Atlas LLM tool

  • Best for: All-in-one SEO teams that want LLM visibility tracking bundled with traditional SEO features
  • Pricing: Growth plan at $199/month
  • Free trial: 7 days
Search Atlas SEO tool March 2026

Search Atlas is an all-in-one SEO and AI visibility platform that combines traditional SEO tools with LLM tracking in a single dashboard.

I tested the Search Atlas Growth plan ($199/month) in March 2026. It comes with a solid set of features, but I noticed that the platform sometimes crashes, and some reports take a while to load.

There are two ways you can check AI search visibility with Search Atlas.

The Site Explorer report lets you analyze the organic and AI search performance of any domain, not just your own.

You can plug in a competitor’s URL and get:

  • Organic performance data
  • Top keywords
  • Traffic estimates
  • LLM visibility
  • Number of AI Overviews
  • Sentiment signals

That’s useful if you want a high-level competitive snapshot. Worth noting: every report takes some time to load.

Search Atlas Site Explorer report April 2026

There’s also a separate LLM Visibility report.

This gives you an overall brand performance score showing how your site appears across LLMs and AI Mode, which is not the same as AI Overviews.

Search Atlas LLM Visibility report March 2026

One thing to keep in mind is that Search Atlas combines mentions and citations into one aggregate score. That’s a big drawback for me.

If you want to understand which specific pages are being cited by LLMs or which content is getting pulled into AI-generated answers, you can’t get that level of detail here. It’s a single visibility number, which works for a high-level check but isn’t enough for actionable optimization work.

Another limitation worth knowing: you can only add two domains to the LLM Visibility report. If you need to track brand performance for client sites, you’ll hit that ceiling fast.

You can also only add two prompts per topic, and since the tool is still evolving quickly, bugs do pop up when adding prompts. This was my experience when testing the Growth plan in March 2026. To their credit, the support team does pay attention to reported issues, and bugs do get fixed, just not always quickly.

For my own AI visibility tracking, I still rely on Semrush’s AI Visibility Toolkit, which offers more granularity and prompt-level data.

Search Atlas prompt report April 2026

I also checked Reddit and LinkedIn feedback, and the sentiment is mixed.

Some users say it takes a bit of time to get used to the platform, and a few wish the support team were faster and more responsive.

Any solid all-in-one tool has a learning curve. Since Search Atlas covers so much ground, it makes sense to budget some onboarding time. If you’ve used Ahrefs before, the interface should feel reasonably familiar.

Here’s what Casey Cornell, the Founder of Pool Journals and Digital Consulting Owner, shared about Search Atlas:

“We use Search Atlas as our primary seo tool now as a replacement for expensive Semrush, I will say, it’s been buggy at times since they’re moving fast and always rolling out new products.

I connected it to my WP site to make changes on their 2.0 model and I didn’t like that if you removed the script at all, it will all go back to the old content. Make hard changes.

I think like anything SA is a “tool” and should be used as such. Not make it your entire SEO strategy in a single product.

I use their growth plan ($199/mo) I also don’t use their AI content because it wasn’t good a while back. I think gem and Claude are prob better not tbh. I like using it for auditing, KW data, local SEO & the GBP scheduler & maps.

A lot of our clients fall under the “local seo” blanket so it’s great for what it offers there.”

Casey Cornell about Search Atlas

Also, fun side note, I had a chance to meet Fidan and other Search Atlas team members in person at SEO IRL in Toronto in Fall 2025, which gave me a bit more confidence that they’re serious about building in public and iterating fast.

5. Wellows

  • Best for: Growing brands and agencies that want AI visibility tracking paired with content generation and outreach tools
  • Pricing: From $37/domain/month
  • Free trial: 7 days
Wellow AI Search tracking tool April 2026

Wellows reached out to me twice before I finally had a chance to test it.

And honestly, that says a lot about the state of this market: there are simply too many new AI monitoring tools launching at once, and properly testing them all takes time.

Wellows is positioned as an AI visibility and monitoring platform designed to help brands track how often they appear across AI-generated answers. From what I tested, it’s clearly built around prompt tracking and cross-platform AI monitoring.

Here’s what you can do with Wellows:

  • Track brand mentions and citations across ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, and AI Mode
  • Get an AI Brand Visibility Score with historical trend data
  • Identify content gaps and outreach opportunities based on which domains get cited most
  • Use AI-powered content generation to create optimized content based on visibility gaps
  • Generate prompts from Google Search Console or upload them manually
  • Filter cited domains by Domain Authority to prioritize outreach

Wellows pricing:

If you want to track mentions and citations across at least:

  • ChatGPT
  • Google AI Overviews

…you’re realistically looking at $97/month minimum.

The upside is that you get 100 prompts, which is generous. But if you want to track more AI models, that’s where pricing jumps hard. The higher-tier plan can run up to $297/month, and at that point, I personally think you should compare it against stronger alternatives.

For example, for that budget, you could consider AI SEO tools, like Semrush One, which gives you both traditional SEO and AI visibility features in one place.

Wellows pricing

I’ve also delved deeper to learn what Wellow users say about the tool on the web.

The Wellow testimonial below is one of the latest reviews of the tool that I could find. My gut feeling tells me it’s AI-generated because of the way it’s styled, but I included it here as well for you to have a different perspective, not only mine.

Just to add a few more cents here, Peekaboo and Semrush AI Visibility toolkit also show which domains get cited the most.

6. OtterlyAI

  • Best for: Solo marketers, startups, and small site owners who want to start tracking AI visibility without a large investment. There are also plans for Marketing teams and agencies that let you track up to 400 prompts.
  • Pricing: From $29/month for 15 prompts that you can track across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and MS Copilot.
  • Free trial: 14 days
Otterly AI Visibility tool April 2026

OtterlyAI is one of the most budget-friendly AI visibility tools on this list. And honestly, that’s what makes it appealing. Not everyone wants to spend $100–$300/month just to experiment with AI visibility.

For just $29/month, you can track one domain with 15 prompts across major AI search platforms, including ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot. OtterlyAI also supports Google AI Mode and Google Gemini as add-ons on eligible plans.

OtterlyAI updates performance data daily, which makes it a practical option for teams that want frequent insights without paying enterprise-level pricing.

However, this AI visibility tool isn’t just for beginners! According to OtterlyAI’s about page, it’s used by 20,000+ marketing professionals and was recognized as a 2025 Gartner Cool Vendor in AI for Marketing.

Here’s what you can do with OtterlyAI:

  • Track brand mentions, sentiment, and website citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Google AI Mode, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot
  • Monitor brand visibility over time with metrics like Brand Visibility Index and Share of Voice
  • Compare your visibility against competitors across AI search platforms
  • Use the AI Prompt Research Tool to discover the prompts and conversational queries your audience is likely asking AI tools
  • Run a GEO Audit to evaluate crawlability, content readiness, and on-page factors that may affect your chances of being cited in AI-generated answers
  • Use Workspaces to manage multiple brands or clients under one subscription (especially useful for agencies)
  • Export data and build custom dashboards with API access or Looker Studio integrations on higher plans
Otterly AI Visibility report

OtterlyAI’s pricing tiers:

  • Lite $29/month: 15 search prompts, ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot, daily tracking, 1 workspace
  • Standard $189/month: 100 search prompts, same core platforms, Google AI Mode, and Gemini available as add-ons, unlimited workspaces
  • Premium $489/month: 400 search prompts, same platform coverage, Google AI Mode, and Gemini available as add-ons, unlimited workspaces
  • Enterprise: Custom pricing for larger teams and advanced needs

OtterlyAI combines multi-platform AI search monitoring with features that go beyond basic mention tracking, like GEO audits, citation analysis, AI prompt research, and workspace management.

This makes it a strong fit not only for smaller teams testing AI visibility, but also for agencies and in-house SEO teams that want a more complete AI search monitoring workflow.

7. Bing Webmaster Tools

  • Best for: Any website owner who wants free, reliable AI performance data directly from the source
  • Pricing: Free
Bing Webmasters Tools

With so many new tools launching every week, it’s easy to overlook one of the most reliable performance tracking tools that’s been around for years: Bing Webmaster Tools.

On February 10th, 2026, Bing announced the addition of an AI Performance report to their Webmaster Tools.   In my opinion, it’s one of the best free AI visibility tools available for getting actual, reliable first-party data on your domain’s performance in AI-generated answers.

By reviewing cited pages and grounding query phrases, the AI Performance report helps clarify your content’s visibility in AI-generated answers.

These insights can help you:

  • Validate which pages are already being used as references in AI answers
  • Identify content that appears frequently across AI answers
  • Spot opportunities to improve clarity, structure, or completeness on pages that are indexed but less frequently cited

Here’s what the Bing AI Performance report looks like for my website, Self Made Millennials, over the three months from January to March 2026.

Bing AI performance report

Bing goes even deeper, showing you which keywords drive views and which pages are cited most.

It was surprising for me to find out that my Substack alternatives post is cited the most. On the contrary, Semrush says my most-cited page is my best SEO tools blog post.

Bing cites pages report

Which AI visibility tools are worth using?

If I had to simplify this list, here’s how I’d frame it:

  • Best overall for SEO teams and agencies: Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit
  • Best budget-friendly paid option: AI Peekaboo
  • Best for beginners: Otterly AI
  • Best free option: Bing Webmaster Tools
  • Best if you already use the platform: SE Ranking or Search Atlas

I still don’t think AI visibility should become the center of your SEO strategy. These tools can be helpful. They can give you directional signals. They can help you spot where your brand shows up, where your pages get cited, and where competitors seem to have an edge. But the data is still volatile.

AI search results change fast. Prompts change. Sources change. And the same question can produce different answers throughout the day.

So if you ask me what I’d prioritize in 2026?

I’d still focus on:

  • publishing genuinely helpful content
  • building topic authority
  • improving site structure
  • making pages easy to parse
  • and sticking to a consistent SEO content strategy

FAQ: AI visibility

An AI visibility tool helps you track how often your brand, website, or content appears in AI-generated search results and LLM responses.

The best tools separate mentions (brand references) from citations (actual sourced content), so you can understand whether AI is simply talking about you or actively using your pages as a source.

Most AI visibility tools simulate prompts across platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews, and AI Mode, then track whether your brand is mentioned or your pages are cited.

Some tools also estimate visibility based on public LLM outputs, citation patterns, and site structure, but most of the data should be treated as directional rather than perfectly precise.

You can monitor Google AI Overviews using tools like Semrush, SE Ranking, Peekaboo, Search Atlas, or Bing Webmaster Tools (for broader AI visibility insights).

I’d also recommend manually checking your most important keywords, because AI Overviews are volatile and can change sources frequently, sometimes multiple times within the same month.

To improve brand visibility in AI search, focus on publishing helpful, well-structured content, strengthening topical authority, improving internal linking, and making pages easy for AI systems to parse.

I’d also watch which pages already get cited, then expand related clusters, refresh underperforming pages, and build content around the exact prompts your audience is likely to ask.
